I built one kind of like this in 1972. I used Bamboo, Polyethylene Film, and Scotch Tape (carton strapping tape with fibeglass). I learned how to fly it off Addicks Dam in Houston.

I was a chief instructor in sough wales in 1978 when an Agur appeared. I test flew it on some small slopes and found it really unstable. It would fly fine, then suddenly flex downwards and become divergent. I refused to fly it. My boos (The school owner, Mike Adams) insisted on soaring it in Merthyr Tydfil. After takeoff, it flexed and dived unstoppably into the ground. I found mike face down in water, seriously injured. He never recovered and died a few years later. Last I ever saw of an Agur...

Forgot something :
In 1984..1986 I have done a lot of towing at the DFC Weser, but I never had a lockout. You just have to concentrate to fly straight in the direction of the rope.
You can turn the glider really easy, what's a big advantage in long thermal flights. The disadvantage on the other hand is, that it's nearly impossible to fly a straight line at higher speeds.
A late congratulation to the Zimmer brothers for this great glider (unfortunately to late for one of them)

I still have a Saphir 16 in my cellar. I have stopped hanggliding in 1989 and have changed to paragliding now.

I used to fly the 19/16 version around '76-77, when I worked as an instructor at Scot Kites, which was based in Glasgow Scotland. It was a nice machine, very docile, easy to take off and land. I had one which was hand-painted like a giant butterfly.

We placed our first order for some 6d's back in the 80's. We are a group of Ecuadorians who used these gliders from training all the way to national competitions. Simply, they were magnificent, reliable and easy to maneuver! we have flown over 12000 feet asl in all kinds of weather, and the gliders were so reliable and kept us soaring and competing with all brands. Needles to say some of my friends hold the some of the national records and also back then one of my friends won the 1st place and I took the 2nd place in one of the national competitions in Quito. Again, part of our success was the fact we knew the gliders by heart, and they performed the way we expected. I got to meet Bill Bennet and toured his factory in Van Nuys as well. Personally congratulated him about the fine product and how pleased we all were. We all miss those good times and keep bunch of pictures as a wonderful reminder of a glider that was our allie and never failed us.
