Hi, I built an EF-5 while living in Sydney, Australia about 1977. It’s in my garage in Wisconsin now. It was sold as sort of a kit. You could buy the machined parts, cables and the sewn sail. The aluminum tubing had to be purchased locally. I built it where I worked on the weekends and hoisted it to the ceiling during the work week. I still have the plans somewhere. It’s a joy to fly. It’s pitch responsive and picks up speed quickly in a dive. Put it in a whip stall with one wing rudder engaged and it will spin. Pull in, apply opposite rudder and it recovers. I’ve never seen a spin from the ground, but ground observers have told me that it made them catch their breath. If you put it into a gradual stall with both rudders engaged, it will stop forward motion and descend vertically – a good way to lose altitude fairly rapidly without picking up speed. I took up a passenger once, but should have moved the attach point farther aft as after about 5 minutes into the flight, I had to tell my passenger to help me push out as my arms were about to give out. Even with him pushing, we couldn’t slow the glider down. We did a run-on flareless high-speed landing on the sand beach at Stanwell Park just south of Sydney and then had a good laugh. When flying along a hillside with one wing close to the ground, applying opposite rudder instantly raises the wing close to the ground giving wingtip control not available with a conventional glider. |
