After starting hanggliding in summer 76 on a 80° Rogallo we built a Valkyrie in spring 77. We started with just the construction plan. It was easy to build ( even as the first homebuild ), especially the sail. But one big disadvantage : it could not be completely disassembled, only folded in half..Therefore we had to build a special car roof rack. For me, the transition from the 80° Rogallo to the Valkyrie was too much, pitch control was way more sensitive. My brother had no problems.. In summer 77 during the Lilienthal Meeting at the Wasserkuppe, two officials were discussing the airworthyness of our Valkyrie. Finally, one remembered Otto Lilienthals last words, and the OK given..He won a prize for his nice performance. Only 3 months after the first flight of the Valkyrie, our next glider, the Rhoenadler was ready for takeoff.. |
